When Someone Asks You to do Something Outrageous
Back when I was 30 I went to a psychotherapist who diagnosed me as obsessive-compulsive.
Everyone is a little obsessive-compulsive. It’s when you think that your salvation depends on you doing or getting something. In other words — you think your ego-self won’t be complete unless you do or get this.
A Course in Miracles says When someone asks you to do something outrageous, do it. They think their salvation depends on it, and if you feel a big block against doing it, you think your salvation depends on not doing it.
Often, when someone thinks their salvation depends on you doing something, and you refuse, they scream and yell and curse you out. That usually makes you want to do it less, but it also means they really, really, really think their salvation depends on it.
Takeaway: The other person’s salvation does not depend on you doing something, but neither does your salvation depend on not doing it. (Unless it’s harmful to you or them.)
