Doesn’t work well with others was often checked off on my grade school report cards by Mrs. O’Keefe, my first and second grade teacher.
In college, I wrote, cast, and directed a play that ran four performances. I was a tyrant, abusive, always disgruntled, never satisfied. These self-revelations repulsed me and I never produced another play.
Now I find myself working with a couple of people on a musical production of sorts. We performed it Thursday night. It’s been 38 years or so from the college thing.
So many years later, I have a sense of the work-of-art having its own impetus. I can contribute to it but no need to wrestle it to the ground. Yeah, there’s still a desire to impose my vision. But to proceed that way doesn’t feel quite right.
Listen up, Mrs. O’Keefe, 60 years later, you may have to change my grade.
I think a great deal of us have been wrestling with certain issues. It's great to realize that so many years later, there was progress!
